Coping with Christmas

A guide for managing difficult people, feelings and situations at Christmas.

“Coping With Christmas” is a practical, compassionate course for people who quietly find the festive season overwhelming. Across nine stand-alone modules, we look honestly at family dynamics, grief, loneliness, money, alcohol, co/parallel parenting and the emotional fallout that often follows. The focus is not on making you more “festive”, but on helping you stay grounded, set realistic boundaries and design a version of Christmas that actually works for you and your life.

Course Content

Module 1. Rethinking Christmas: Pressure, Myths, and What You Actually Want
Why Christmas feels so loaded, how cultural and family stories shape your expectations, and how to start separating what you’ve been told it “should” be from what you actually want and can manage.

Module 2. The Art of Saying No: Boundaries, Guilt, and Family Pressure
How to say no to plans, demands and traditions that drain you, with realistic scripts for handling guilt, pushback and the fear of “ruining Christmas” by honouring your limits.

Module 3. Coping With Tricky Family Dynamics
Understanding old roles and patterns that reappear at Christmas, and learning ways to step back from drama, protect your energy and respond with more perspective around difficult relatives.

Module 4. Children, Expectations, and Disappointment
Why Christmas is such a pressure point for children and adults, how to manage your expectations and theirs, and how to cope when reactions are ungrateful, overwhelmed or simply not what you hoped for.

Module 5. When Christmas Hurts: Bereavement, Estrangement, and Absent People
Gentle support for facing the empty chair, grief, estrangement and lost futures at Christmas, with ideas for small rituals, realistic choices and protecting yourself from unhelpful pressure to “be cheerful”.

Module 6. Loneliness, Isolation, and “Everyone Else Is Having More Fun”
Exploring different kinds of loneliness - alone, unseen, or left out - and how comparison, social media and family myths intensify it, plus practical ways to create small but genuine moments of connection.

Module 7. Money, Alcohol, and Overdoing It
A grounded look at financial pressure, overspending, drinking and doing far too much, with simple strategies to set limits, reduce shame and avoid being the collateral damage of one month’s expectations.

Module 8. Co or Parallel Parenting at Christmas
Support for separated parents navigating handovers, different households, new partners and big feelings, whether you’re co-parenting cooperatively or parallel parenting to keep conflict and chaos to a minimum.

Module 9. Designing Your Own Version of Christmas (and the Aftermath)
Bringing everything together to shape a version of Christmas that fits your real life, plus how to handle the emotional “hangover” afterwards and use what you’ve learned to make next year a little kinder to you.
